30 days left

1700km! Not going to happen this year.

2010km in 2010 is just not going to be accomplished. I will re-evaluate where I could have prevented myself from injuiries, and keep a consistent running base.

My goal will be to finish strong and keep my 35km /wk target until Dec 31. After which I will set-up 2011km in 2011, and attack it with a better plan, with race schedule and training targets.

Until then, happy holidays!

check out my other project: http://espresso-adventures.blogspot.com

I've really been pouring more energy into that.
Keep it locked during the holidays as I'll unveal what I've learned from this year.

Week 37: 83km

To Date: 1310km
Best run: seeing as 6/7 runs were in the beaches (Neville Park Loop)...
The Beaches makes me happy as I get to hear sounds of water and run along the broadwalk. Run past DDS, Elmer (where JD lives), and it's from my house so it's always great running to clear the head and just run.

Why do I run?
That is a great question, as it seems like I'm obessed with putting up big numbers, following a training regimen, and competing. Sometimes it's for the pure push of physical activity, sometimes it's just for pure enjoyment to clear my head, sometimes it's for a pre-determined goal.
This year the goal is 2010km accumulated in 2010. I'm slowing inching my way to this.... V suggested that I have a celebration 5km run on Dec 31st. or Whenever I reach that goal.... On Track after a long break of 1.5 months away from running. Not just physically but emotionally I've been unmotivated during that break, and I think it's good to sometimes just make a clean break. It was enough for me.

Then Summer rolled around, and I focused more on swimming and cycling. Focused on teaching and going towards my life goal, then with summer rolling towards an end I had an amazing trip to SoCal, SF, and Pan Pacs. This inspired me to get back into trail running and outdoor swimming while I still could enjoy the weather.

Motivation is key, but ask yourself why are you running?
Sometimes I don't feel like running if I know it's crowded, as it distracts me from focusing on form and running around others is not very fun. Morning runs mean people who actually wave back, as opposed to evening runs.. where 1/10 might wave. I enjoy people waving or nodding, bascially acknowledging that I exist. It's mostly a game that I play with myself; count the number of people that make eye-contact and wave, nod or say "HI". It's fun! My PR is 25. Mostly on the Western Beach fronts... over on the EAST it's about 15.
It is also more peaceful in the morning, minimal amounts of drivers that want to honk their horns or whistle at you... (flattering, but really... get over yourself). Yes I where shorts, and yes they are short, but doesn't mean you can holla at your guurl. FARR REAL!

honestly I run because I can, because I didn't find swimming challenging anymore, couldn't push and see different sceneries, and I love how the wind just goes right past you and cancels out other noises. I love trail running, and just smelling the outdoors makes me happy.

If it makes you happy, than do it!

26:

Results of a hard week!
Started off really strong!
Sun, Mon , TUES = 31k
THEN I hit a wall by being insane and trying to do a 14km long run on Tuesday..
it was great to hit the trails, but I felt it in my LEFT calf for the next couple of days.

OVERALL:    k
This week 31k (-4.5k)

In other news: Swimming = 5km+ this week. Went in the water 3x. Not bad (just not a great workout!)
Once the weather starts getting better, I'll be back up for more!
Summerville you are my friend! plus it's also great to have friends there.

WORLDCUP news.

It's no surprise that I'm rooting for the Three Lions (Brits) via ENGLAND
Many people ask why I cheer for them - and not another typical Asian sqaud. The reason I tell them is because "Why not?"

I enjoy the rough fineese of the English primeir league and that all of their players originate from the EPL. Therefore with my love of Manchester United and the glory days of Beckham.. who wouldn't cheer for this sqaud.

My team is in the Round of 16 and face the tough opponents Germany.
Today the Top seed USA (Group C) fell to the Black stars from Ghana. 2-1. Had Eng played ghana they would have crushed the black stars.
It's a tough match tomorrow AM (but it's going to be fun!!!)

BACK on track with Insanity, and Running!
G20 will not ruin my weekend -- even though my next MMMM will be on the aftermath of the happenings

Currently reading: The Immortal life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot
(such a great book  about the cells HeLa and the life of the Lacks family)

BACK to running schedule!
it's going tough - super sore.. but it's the pain that is horrible.

Monday Mornings: Manic Muffins

This is a new segment in lieu of one of my favourite locations to get a good espresso/americano and muffin combo... for the early mornings.

M^4 hopes to start the working week with an outlook. A mindset to help guide oneself, and direct the energy of yourself.

Manic Coffee ; They even havea new layout, and the website is finally finished. woooooooooo

This week I'd like to touch upon the notion of: DRIVE....

"What DRIVES you to succeed" The sentence that I just presented raises several questions about how our mind is processing and interpreting thoughts and emotions. When I say Drive you start to quick jump towards your end goal, the accomplished task.
How come we skip the process, the method, the "HOW" notion to reach our goal? Why not STOP and think about the small steps?

Is it easier for us to focus on the BIG picture as opposed to the little picture. Quite frankly, I agree with that quick jump. It's FAST, it's focused, it's DIRECT. But let's not forget the detailed parts of the process.

But what provokes the drive that most successful people have. That IT factor... These thoughts are self-oriented; meaning "from the self". The Pure thought originating from the self. NO attachment to judgement, morals or values... but the RAW self.

I'm going to expand on this next Monday.. for the new segment of M^4.

Next time you have a goal... a dream... STOP and ask yourself who is driving this idea.....
Hopefully it's self-orientated and not influenced primarily by others.

21: Summer weather!

18., 19 weeks ( - 71km) Distance 0, but I did manage to walk ALOT in London probably 60km... but it's not running, so I can't count it.

Week 20: Maas Marathon (36km), not quite 42.2km BUT I honestly pushed myself beyond what I thought was capable leading up to the race itself. Sometimes you just get caught up in the race environment, the competitive edge and it motivates you to push aside that pricking pain and RUN with the 3:45 group.

Sometimes it's the RACE environment that just PUSHES you

Week: 21 (-35.5km) Dealing with TRANSIT, ASH problem, returning to work and jetlag. Combine that with jello legs for biking made it diffucult to motivate myself to RUN. It was more preventative in terms of nursing my injuiry and just plain laziness.

Currently: week 22!!! (MAY 24 weekend!!!) Weather is amazing for the several days ahead. 28-30 degrees. Sun tanning??
Did 6km run, and felt okay today. will try again tomorrow.

The Tally from the week ending 21: (   890km)
Reserves: (173.1km)

EXTRA Mileage paid off in Feb, March... but Crashed in April (Maybe a case of too hard, too fast).
STILL ON TRACK!!!!

Saturday, May 22, 2010

Will count the weeks soon

Quick update:

Left ankle is getting better. It's tight behind the ankle joint, tight muscle. doing some physio exercises and massage.

Pushed through, and completed 35km of the Maas Marathon. I will do a Marathon in Europe. Had to throw in the towel, because I didn't want to jeopardize my trip.

Back home, and will revamp exercise plan and goals. I'm still on track for 2010 in 2010, just a minor setback.

Cheers

Thanks for the advice 44darts! I'll upload photos soon, but check out the travel blog for what I've been doing for the last 3.5 weeks around Europe.

15: MAJOR set-back

On Easter Monday... had a great 15k run.

The next couple of days, my left ankle killed. It could be the shoes? It could be overtraining...
but I'm being cautious and didn't run T, W... then R, F came around and was super cold.

W - night I became violently ill... body overload? did 2.5k of swim instead, as ankle still killing.

There is a slight possibility that I will run at 6pm tonight (but don't hold your breathe)

Week: 15k (-20.5km)

Year: 854km (350.1km)

Something I picked up on the internet:

- you are a reflection of the average top 5 people whom you surrond yourself.
- like attracts like

14: Easter Weekend

ACTUAL Spring weather. Upwards of 28 degrees over the long Easter weekend.

Week: 74.6km (+36.1km)(+6km of walking today)
(MARCH=333.4km) *NEW MONTH RECORD*
Year: 838.6km (+370.6km)

LONG RUN: 23km - home, DV, Moore, Y/E, Yonge downhill, Rosedale.
Feeling: not that thirsty... exhausted running down Broadview/Langley.. but short bursts of walks helped very much to test my mental anguish.
(Very similar to the route below... but minus the Beaches loop)

Impression of "this week": CAN DO ATTITUDE! Ask yourself. are you being aware of your consciousness... your EGO, your outlook towards your goal. If not... ask yourself WHY? Food for thought.

This week: Mon - high Tea with S and K. Great ego trip head-to-head combat with biker on Queen. Need to let go, but he was sooo slow.
T: typical work, teach, work.
W: work, Brunch with JB @ Boom on College... decent brunch affair.
R: work, work, gift purchasing, work, BIKE ride to Anna.
(ooo fun convo with random bike messanger along Bloor during rush hour... Douvercourt-High Park... refreshing to see someone so dedicated to the bike riding)
Hangout at Annas, followed by MS easter egg/bday bash. This resulted in 3am sleeptime
F: super sleep in time - run, Coffee with JB and walk in beaches!
Sa: more of the same! and video editting.

13: Spring Obession

Welcome to another weekly installment

Week: 73.4 (+ 34.9km)
Year: 771.5km (+ 334.5km)

LONGEST RUN: 30k

This past weekend was Around the Bay 30km. For the last 3 years I've dreamt of doing the run, having signed up but never actually competed in the event. It was time for an test run in the middle of the week.
Great timing as the weather on wed was a balmy 8 degrees, compared to Thursday and Friday -21 with wind chill.

You're probably thinking how this 30k happened:
DVP Trail to Pottery, hitch onto Bayview
Bayview to Brickworks.
UP Mud Creek or Moore Trails
Mt. Pleasent to Eglinton.
Across back to Yonge.
Downhill from Yonge to Rosedale.
Through Rosedale to the viaduct
Down Broadview, turning home.
Then lakeshore to Woodbine loop.

Last section, I was hurting!

Took Thursday OFF, and Friday was my first "unplanned zero". Woke up late for bfast date with MS @ MC. And the temperature dropping to -21 with windchill did NOT help that matter.

Friday also meant - full day of work, and play! out till 1:30am
Saturday I sucked it up and went out for a jog...
overall could have done 90+, but unplanned zero's are my indicators that I have too much on my plate!

12: Pile on the Mileage

This week: 90.4km ( +51.9km)
*NEW* Best run: MUDRUN (details below)
Year: 684.1km ( +299.6km)

Bike: 100km (Just commuting)
Accomplishments/ reflection:

This week marked the best "winter" weather we've had since the 60s. The temperature was a blistering 17 degrees on Wed and Thursday which resulted in some shorts wearing opportunities.
Seeing as the weather was SO great, I ended up running 23 km on both days. On Wed (commonly known as St.Paddy's day) I ended the night of reading with a nice run out to the end of the beaches --> Richmond/University. It was a great route, and ended with a tall americano at whorebux.
Thursday meant that there was going to be a long day stuck at work. 5 hours followed by a quick bike ride to another 4 hours meant I was pretty tired. During my break I decided to bike home and make an americano and bring it back. Good idea, as it rejunvinated me for the next 7 hours of awake time.

Impromtu mud run:
I started with a run up the to the trails (the long way), and running along bayview as I famously do. Bayview is a road that goes about 70km/h.... to hitch up to Mud Creek. You would think that I was all muddy by the first 10km, oh ... you stand corrected as it wasn't until the second trail (Leading from St.Clair/Heath). I finally found the second entrance to the trail and decided to run on my "regular" side as I felt more comfortable slugging away. Half way into the trail, I realizde that I was running upwards up the slant of the hill. Not such a great idea with leaves slightly covering the muddy patches I would soon discover. As I went higher it felt similar to running on quick sand. So i made fast feet and didn't get anything dirty. Returning to the trail meant climbing over a large branch/log. As I leaped off of the branch, my entire left FOOT SANK into the mud. (glug). epic FAIL. noticing that my right foot was still fine I kept going, adment that I would just still keep it clean. 5 steps later, same result, different shoe.
AFter that it meant that I was going to get the shoes dirty regardless of the trail. In hindsight, I should have avoided this trail until May, as the trail is still thawing away. Good to know. There still remained about 8km until I was home, so that resulted in some looks by pedestrains.

Lesson learned!
Happy days!

11: Paralympics time!

Weekly Total: 56km ( + 17.2km)
Yearly: 593.4km (+247.7km)

4 x 14km runs. 3 days off. 1 affected by 12 days of straight running. 1 day affected by lack of time. 1 day affected by Rainy weather.

Overall: slightly disappointed.

Today: no run - not enough time and feeling really low energy due to Daylight savings of jumping forward by one hour. Not much difference, but it has been weird going home with the sun setting.....

Agenda for this week: Finish reading Dahl. GEtting cracking with the planning. and more reading.

week 10: March Madness

Welcome again to another weekly report of the running machine, PandaClaws ver.2.0.

March MAdness starts March 18th til the end of the month.
Final Four is happening around Easter Weekend.. yikes.

Not only has the third month begun early this week, we in N.America have been on a high from the olympics. Canada met again in the Men's Hockey game that ended the XXI olympics in Vancouver on a celebratory note. Just like the women's match, the Canadian NHL superstars won with much style. It was a story book ending for Stevie Y and his boyz. Sid the Kid made the HUGE game winning goal in OT to cap off an amazing olympics performance by the Cdn team. 14 GOLD medals, 6 in the last 3 days, and just a warm, friendly and spontaneous cheerful pride that will be known for the games. The legacy that was left behind will be in the minds of many Canadians for years to come.

GO CANADA GO!

Weekly stats: 87km (+51.5km) WOOOO achieved my goal.
Year to date: 537.4km (+ 230.2km)

Still debating whether to change my dates from Sun-Sat, ---> Mon-Sun.

Other exciting news: Alice in Wonderland 3D Tim Burton style has hit the theatres. Should be a great movie.

Feburary Stats:

Day 17 of Olympics and the end of the Vancouver 2010 Olympics.

Final medal count: 13G 7S 5B (+ 1G or S for the Men's Hockey Team)

Stats for the month of Feburary
Total Distance: 288.4km
Longest Run: 20km (Had enough time in the AM and really pushed myself from the Neville Park Loop)

Note: This number was probably becuase I was nearly running 6x/week (only 4 days off in the Month of Feb). Plus I got into more "running to work" scenerios and was able to use the base in Jan to push my mileage for Feb.

Comparing this to Janurary
Total: 175.2km
Longest run: 11.2km
Goal: Run Game with Gordo AT endurance corner.... I will tally the stats tonight.

Total to date: 463.5km
Time taken: 97:17:12!!! 97 hours... holy COW

Goals for Mar:
- Seeing as I didn't register in time for Around the Bay (which would have conflicted with work), I will try to run 30k the last weekend of Marh
- Increase weekly kms (aiming for 80+/week)

Saturday, February 27, 2010

week 9: Olympics Medals`

Olympic medal count: 10G, 7 S, 4 B = 21

Medal Count (as of Tuesday): 6 Gold, 4 Silver, 1 Bronze = 11 medals.

Weekly: 78.3km (+39.8km)
Yearly: 378.1km (+ 97.6km) means-- 2.5 weeks worth of OFF

Canada's First Gold Medal, Canada Men's "Hockey" discussion, Snowboard cross disgusting women's qualification....

BookClub: White Tiger!

week 7: Olympics (winter edition)

VANCOUVER 2010!

Weekly stats:  74.1km (+35.6km) PERSONAL HIGH!
Year to date: 299.8km ( +57.8km)

Personally not the hugest winter sports fan, but I have to admit the opening ceremonies were amazing.
the orca whales, the boy running in the field, the tappers, the fiddlers (ashley macisaac), the performers (KD Lang, Meesha, Nelly and Bryan Adams) all transformed the BC Place into an exciting atmosphere!

Small glitch with the Caldron, but the torch bearers were still amazing! Catriona le may doan, Nancy Green, Steve Nash, and Wayne Gretzky.
ctvolypmics.ca HD streaming live.... AMAZING technology!

Newsmakers: Adam Giambrone sex sandal, RCMP "criminal mind" murders...., more auto recalls.

Here at home - we're gearing up for CIS swimming competition! should be fun times. In the booth for the heats, which is what I like. good times good times!

week 6: Feb Fun

Mind, Body, Soul, Self

Update on running totals

Week: 61.8km (PB) (+ 23.3k --> more than a half marathon)
Year to date: 225.7km (203.5km)  (+22.2k)

Thoughts on this week:

Really pushed myself hard with 5 days of 10km+ runs, add a light run mid-week, and also took a much needed REST day on Thursday. While running allows me to challenge myself, I'm constantly trying to improve my times for the 10k route around my place, or the 7.4k run from work. I find that my times decrease on great run days, and that they increase on "putty" days. I'm not one to compare myself to others, as I find that too taxing and it turns into a vicious cycle. Instead I equate my runs on my moods, time and factors during the run. Not only allowing myself to be pushed for a faster time (but also trying to gauge my progress)

The week started with mild weather and ended in a blistered cold and windy front, making times slower than my progress shows. I find that I'm actually getting much more toned (unintentionally) and that my cardiovascular system isn't as taxed as my years training for only 3 months for the upcoming marathon.

Running outdoors has allowed my to take myself to a new level. I never thought I'd be able to enjoy winter running, but with motivation from running buddies and running mags. Doesn't hurt that I'm able to get outside and soak up that Vitamin D from the suns rays. Just starting my summer tan 6 months early.

Recommends: Lang and O'leary Exchange, and CBC the National streaming online @ cbc.ca/video

Mini espresso adventure today: Green Grind (college and manning), and Rooster (Riverdale Park).
Rooster: strong brew, but weak on personality of the beans.... disappointed.
Green Grind: no espresso b/c of water piping issues. Earl Grey (via loose leaf). thumbs up!

Until next week!

Weekly Total: 51.2k ( +12.7k  )38.5k
To Date: 164k ( -1k )

Newsmakers: iPad, Haiti miracles, banks clamp down, 3rd straight increase in GDP, World economic Forum.

Week4

Week's Results (33.6k, target: 38.5k )  Bank: -4.9k
Yearly Total: 112.8k Target: 126.5k     Bank: -13.7k

The Result of last week's rolled ankle played a toll on this weeks training.
THe earlier part of the week was still resting the ankle, back in Action on Monday but took it easy mid week.
Ended the week with big numbers.

Longest run: 10.3k; Fastest Pace: 4:20

Started to introduce Pilate into my routine. Verdict: it kills!

On Tuesday I went on an espresso adventure with twinA.

Mission :4 Locations in <3Hours.

(counterclock wise: Tango Palace, Mercury, Bulldog, Linux Cafe)

Tango Palace: Americano and book
Mercury: Cappuccino
Bulldog: "bulldog" Cappuccino/Latte fusion
Linux: Americano

Verdict: Mercury! the smooth sweetness of the foam paired with the subtle beans were the outright winners in my mind!
Tues: Tegan and Sara Show! AMAZING!
FRI: 2 hour break between work resulted in a mid-afternoon pint!

Happy week!

Running commentary

Gordo over at Endurance Corner has explained about a Run Game.
Let's see how long I can keep this up.

For the beginning of the new year: I'm following the Epic Camp and reading all of the athlete's blogs as I find inspiration for my own run game.

2010

Hello Blogland!

2010 marks a new decade, new year and always great plans for the future.

As we get older, we start to think more and more about life goals, ST, LT, and anything in between to keep us motivated. For the first time, there is no external motivation to accomplish a certain project (re: school, aspirations, etc..). 19 years of schooling. For letters and knowledge. Worth every penny and time spent.

This year marks internal motivation! Starting with career change and constant challenging the status quo with age-old questions such as:

"what is the meaning of life?"
"Do I really want to be associated with these people?
"Is this a reflection of myself?"
"What is my purpose?"
"Can world peace be attained?"

Many questions, many insights, many thoughts. Hopefully it'll boil down to exploring more topics through life, through story-telling, through knowledge passed down.

As usual there are not really resolutions that I make, but goals.

2009: Running stats 730km... + 80 that were never logged.
2010: 2010km, keeping up to date with my logging, fitting a race schedule, and keeping to my training (even while on vacation)

sprint Tri (or olympic tri)--> Summer 2010

Quality over quantity

New Beginnings.

As such: I will be posting my stats for the week every Saturday afternoon/Sunday morning for the week that passed. Hopefully with carefully thought out training 2010 will be a feat to master.
Wanted to do 2010 of S/B/R (But I realize that 2010km of swimming is intense. but I'll try)

Other endeavours include:
Biking to MTL and Back, and definitely another trip to Niagara via Bike.
Home ownership
Value of Life! (more later)
